1. On December 12 the US supreme court all but handed the US election to one George W Bush.

2. Dubya was born to George and Barbara on July 6, 1946, in New Haven Connecticut, under the sign of Cancer. He moved to Texas aged two, and grew up being called "Junior" and dreaming of baseball hero Willie Mays.

3. Like his father before him, he became a member of the Skull and Bones, Yale's oldest secret society - and soon developed close ties to the oil industry.

4. Unlike his father, he also developed a reputation for getting well-oiled, on one occasion while behind the wheel of a car. Here's a video of him years later, looking rather the worse for wear.

5. The fascination for baseball didn't wear off either: he liked it so much he bought the team, a success that put him on the presidential path.

6. Little-known fact: Dubya's other favourite sport is bass fishing.

7. Some say Bush is too stupid to be president. Others think he's just got a way with words. What do you think?

8. While he was governor of Texas, more prisoners were executed than in any other state - but the American people didn't want to make a song and dance about it.

9. The media have not been kind about the outlook for the presidency. Here's his inauguration speech and a diary of his first 100 days.

10. Punch him. You know you want to.
